Welcome!

Red Deer Readers is a diverse group of Sheffielders who love reading, and talking about, an equally diverse range of books. And we’ve been doing that since 1997.

From our first book, A Prayer for Owen Meany, to our Silver Jubilee read, Lullaby Beach, we’ve romped through a huge number of absolute smashers. Fading memory also recalls a few not-so-smashing. However the book lands, though, the discussions fascinate, delight and surprise. Read about how we got started here.

Over the years we’ve learned the power and versatility of the human thumb, that weird can be good, the same book can both delight and enrage – among so many other revelations. Oh, and don’t pass the teapot hand-to-hand otherwise pregnancy will certainly ensue.

Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

P.J. O’Rourke

A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.

Italo Calvino
